Unexpected places to print: fences, elevators, stair risers and more

Once people see what the printer can do, they start pointing at everything. Here are the jobs owners get once a town knows their name.

Building and construction

  • Panels for construction fencing showing what’s coming
  • Temporary facade art during a renovation
  • Elevator interiors with a story on every floor

Small spaces, big effect

  • Stair risers: book spines, messages or patterns
  • Escape rooms built around printed walls
  • Recording studios and music rooms
  • Food truck interiors and service windows

In the shop

  • Canvas, aluminum and acrylic panels
  • Cabinet doors and furniture fronts
  • Tile and slate pieces, printed before they’re installed

What to plan for

  • Anything the printer can’t reach on site can be printed flat in the shop and installed. Read print in your shop.
  • Run a test print on every new material before you quote.
  • Odd jobs make great videos. Film them.

How to pitch it

The best prospects have a wall people see every day, a reason to change now, like an opening, a rebrand or a renovation, someone you can reach who decides, and a budget for signage, decor or branding already. Start with general contractors, developers, escape room and entertainment operators, and architects.

The walk-in takes about 20 seconds:

“Hi, I’m [name] with [your business]. We print full-color murals and graphics straight onto walls, right here in [city]. Can I show you what that wall would look like with your logo on it?”

Take a photo of the wall, mock the design up on it, and follow up with an email in two days and a call in a week. Most jobs aren’t lost to price. They’re lost to a follow-up that never happened.

Questions people ask

What surfaces can a wall printer print on?

Drywall, brick, concrete, wood, glass, metal, tile and plastic, with the right prep. A few metals and plastics are off limits. See surfaces.

Can you print a stair riser?

Risers are short, so most owners print them as panels in the shop and install them.
